Emotional Freedom Techniques - EFT Tapping
What is EFT?
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques.
You'll notice that the word Techniques is plural. That's because EFT can be used in different ways, depending on the intention of the work.
At its simplest, EFT is a self-care practice that combines gentle tapping on specific acupressure points with mindful awareness of thoughts, emotions, sensations, and experiences.
Many people find that EFT helps them feel calmer, more grounded, and better able to navigate stress, overwhelm, anxiety, and everyday emotional challenges.
How I Use EFT -
As an Integrative Counsellor, I use EFT in two distinct ways.
EFT as a Therapeutic Approach
Within counselling, EFT can be used as part of deeper therapeutic work.
Together, we may explore underlying beliefs, emotional patterns, difficult experiences, or unresolved memories. EFT can help clients process emotions safely while staying connected to the present moment and their body's experience.
In this context, EFT becomes one of several therapeutic tools that may be woven into the counselling process alongside approaches such as EMDR, somatic awareness, mindfulness, and talking therapy.
EFT as a Self-Care Practice
The EFT Tapping Circles I offer are different. These sessions are not therapy.
Instead, they provide a gentle, guided opportunity to slow down, check in with yourself, and bring awareness to what you're experiencing in the moment.
Rather than trying to fix or get rid of difficult feelings, we practise acknowledging them with curiosity and compassion.
Through tapping and mindful awareness, we create space for whatever is present.
Many people find this process helps them feel calmer, more regulated, and more connected to themselves.
The Science Behind EFT
Research into EFT has grown considerably over the past two decades.
Studies suggest that EFT may help reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma-related distress in some individuals.
